Revd. Canon George Crate, 1928 – 2006
We have probably all heard by now of the death on Saturday 21st October 2006, of Revd. Canon George Crate who was our Vicar at Christ Church from 1964 and at St. Peter’s from 1983, both until 1994. We all owe him a great depth of gratitude for all his work in our two parishes during his long term of office.
Our thoughts and our prayers will be with his widow Heather, and children Gillian, Roger and Stephen as they take up their lives again and we can rejoice as George enters into eternal life with Jesus Christ, his Lord and ours. Edmund and Janet.
There was a “Celebration of George’s life” at Emmanuel, Loughborough on Thursday 2nd November 2006. This followed a family service at Gilroes Crematorium the same afternoon. The celebration service followed instructions left by George.
There were tributes from Roger Crate, Andrew Norris who was trained by George as a curate in Mountsorrel twenty years ago and David Newman who succeeded George as Rural Dean of Akeley East. There was a talk by Jon Walker and a song God in my living, from Sim Walker.
A Commendation and Blessing was given by The Rt. Revd. Tim Stevens, Bishop of Leicester.
Present were people from the Baptist and Methodist churches of Mountsorrel, as well as Emmanuel Loughborough, Christ Church Mountsorrel, and St Peter's Mountsorrel.
George was a Trustee of The Good News Centre and they showed respect by closing the shop for the day.
Songs used during the service included Here is Love, I’ll Stand with arms high, When all around is fading, God of all comfort, I surrender all, Make way Make way, Jesus is King and Thine be the Glory.
Readings were: 2 Corinthians 5:16–21 Read by Roger Crate, and 1 Peter 1:3–9 read by Helen Newman.
There was a retiring collection towards the work of the Good News Centre and Steps, the charity that helps children who have cerebral palsy.
